My experiences as an online student in this "new normal" brought about by the pandemic has not been easy. For starters, the learning environment is drastically different from a classroom setup wherein I am free to focus all my mental faculties on the lessons at hand, aided by the immediate feedback available through the professors, whether it be subtle or not, verbal or by other means. In online classes, this degree of feedback is hampered by the quality of the connections used by the participants, and therefore I find it more difficult to not allow my attention to wander. In the cases of severe interruptions, I even find it more productive to tune out of the online meetings, and focus entirely on the uploaded presentations in order to derive lessons.
While it might have been romanticized before online classes have started that learning from home may be more comfortable than attending school, I find that after a month of classes that this is not completely true. While it is a given that we are studying in our homes, with the comforts that we normally cannot or do not have when attending face-to-face meetings, I have found that having to forego the environment where interactions between me and my peers and the professors are relatively unrestricted, as compared to these online platforms where our interactions may be limited to how much we can afford quality connections, is not truly ideal for a quality learning environment.
The time when this pandemic ends and the time when we finally get to meet each other in person once again, would be something to truly look forward to. Until then, let's have tea (or coffee, your choice) and let's do our best in this new environment.
