· A contactless card works with the identification of the smart chip or PIN (Personal Identification Number) embedded on the device. This is then verified though a databank in order to check for the validity of the contactless card. If all is valid, the functions associated with the contactless card is then unlocked for a certain period of time or actions as predetermined by security protocols.
· The information in the chip can vary, but should ideally be standardized by institutions such as Visa or Mastercard, in order for more widespread use across potentially allied banks. It is presupposed that the main information in the chip on the contactless cards includes vital information such as the customer ID, card ID, and the encryption necessary to protect this information from unintended recipients.
· Again, the maximum amount, or the number of allowable transactions that can be paid for using contactless cards vary by banks. BPI for example limits Contactless Card transactions from Php 100,000.00 up to Php 250,000.00 depending on the card used, as well as not having a maximum number of transactions. CITI does not have a stated limit, with the exception that the balance does not exceed the user’s credit limit.
· These upper limits are imposed by the banks in order to have security for the contactless card transactions.
· Since contactless cards operate by way of radio signals, experts recommend taking out the cards in the wallet in the cases of having multiple cards. This is to ensure that the radio signal that is being transmitted is from the correct card.
·
If the card is
reported stolen, the card can be locked from the bank’s end in order to prevent
further transactions with the use of the said card. This can also be the case
for other reasons such as going over the specified transaction limits, or other
scenarios as required.
